Maple Grove Fire-Rescue Department

"I wanted to take this opportunity to give feedback on our GasTrainer package, Leaking Propane Tank Prop and HazMat Placard Kit.

In February of 2010 we received our training tools package. This was a significant investment in a single piece of training equipment. The original decision to purchase was based on the lack of practical hands-on training for staff and students in the use of four-gas monitors. Most of the training revolved around verbalizing scenarios and simulated reading changes.

Annually, our department works in concert with several other local departments to conduct a firefighter academy for new recruits. Part of the curriculum is HazMat Operations Responder Training. Utilizing the GasTrainer with the remote emitters and the Leaking Tank Prop during HazMat training has been a quantum leap ahead for our students. Previously the orientation consisted of the students being shown a meter followed by lecture. The GasTrainer and props have been integrated into the training and they utilize them on scenarios presented to them in class. From initial scene assessment, scene safety, defensive actions to decon, they utilize the meter, just as they would on an actual call.

We have already noticed an increase in the confidence when utilizing four-gas monitors on the part of our staff and students. Being able to remotely alter readings on the student monitor creates a more realistic environment. Firefighters retain skill information better if the hear, see and do. This tool provides all three.

Three of the most impressive things about the GasTrainer are:
  • The number of "Ah Ha!" moments experienced by seasoned and new firefighters when working with the simulator, especially for the first time.
  • Our department educators have been able to utilize the unit with minimal training.
  • The equipment is "firefighter resistant" which means it takes a beating and keeps working.
The equipment has met and exceeded our expectations and we look forward to many years of use.
